Course Description

Digital communication, the exchange of data coded in terms of discrete signals, is by far the dominant means of remote information conveyance. From smartphones to wired telephony to optical internet signalling, digital communication techniques form the foundation for high-speed and reliable information transfer. This course provides an introduction to the theory of digital communications and its application to physical systems. The course moves progressively from a mathematical treatment of deterministic and random signals to quantization, line coding, baseband detection, modulation and channel coding. The lectures will be supplemented by a mandatory lab that applies the theoretical concepts and algorithms learned in the course.
