How to Enroll, C4 Gateway Courses
Introduction
C4: The Cross-Campus Capstone Classroom is a special initiative at York University. You can read more about it here: C4: The Cross-Campus Capstone Classroom The C4 website says “Since C4 does not yet have its own course number, students must register for credit in a course within their major or outside of it, as an elective, to access the C4 classroom.”
As listed on Gateway Courses and Liaisons, the Lassonde School of Engineering offers several 3.0 credit and 6.0 credit gateway courses.
This site is intended for C4 students who already understand the process and who have been advised to pursue LE/EECS 4080 Computer Science Project, LE/EECS 4088 Computer Science Capstone Course, or LE/EECS 4090 Software Project as a gateway course. All other students should consult with C4 staff for further information and advising.
EECS 4080 3.0 Computer Science Project, **AS C4 GATEWAY COURSE**
Below is a modified version of the enrollment process of EECS 4080 3.0 Computer Science Project, tailored for the C4 gateway context.
Eligibility Checklist "A" (Pre-requisites)
- You have successfully completed 36 credits in LE/EECS major courses (“Normally restricted to students who have taken 36 credits in computer science.”)
- Your cumulative GPA is 4.50 or better over all major EECS courses (without second digit “5”)
- You have completed LE/EECS 2030 3.00 or LE/EECS 1030 3.00;
- You have not already taken any of: EECS 4081 6.00, EECS 4082 6.00, EECS 4084 6.00, EECS 4088 6.00, EECS 4480 3.00, ENG 4000 6.00
- You are planning to take the course in one of the Summer, Fall, or Winter academic terms
These criteria are as be found under Course Descriptions.
Fulfilling Eligibility Checklist “A” means that you have verified that you satisfied the above criteria.
Eligibility Checklist "B" (Course Content)
- Topic & Supervisor
- You have identified a topic that is suitable for a project course. “This is a course for advanced students, normally those in the fourth year of an honours program”
- The onus is on the student to demonstrate that the project “is appropriate for course credit” in EECS.
- This topic should be substantive, suitable for fourth-year level of study, and have a project scope that is appropriate for a single academic term (i.e., 36 contact hours plus study time; analogous to any other advanced 4th-year EECS course)
- You have identified a faculty member who has agreed to supervise the project.
- A list of some available projects for the term appears on the potential-projects-upcoming page. If you identify a project from this list, you can contact the corresponding faculty member to discuss your fit to the project and whether that faculty member is willing to act as the supervisor for your work on that project.
- Alternatively, you may work in collaboration with a department faculty member to develop a project that is not currently listed. A list of faculty members can be found on the departmental web site http://www.eecs.yorku.ca.
- If you need help identifying potential supervisors for a topic you have in mind, contact the course coordinator.
- Contract Draft
- You have developed a draft of the course contract draft that adheres to the Project Contract Template.
- You will need to work in close collaboration with your supervisor in order to be able to populate all of the required contract components, such as: the topic description, the background requirements, readings, deliverables, and evaluation scheme.
- You and your course supervisor will potentially need to iterate on this document until it is complete.
- Contract Signatures
- Your course supervisor has carefully reviewed the project draft and has signed it, indicating their approval.
- You have signed the contract, indicating your agreement to adhere to the contents of the contract.
Fulfilling Eligibility Checklist “B” means that you have an signed, draft written agreement in place with a supervising faculty member for an identified topic.
Eligibility Checklist "C"
- Your finalized and signed contract (two signatures, yours and your course supervisor) has been submitted to the contract to the course coordinator for approval before the deadline (see dates).
- The student should send the final contract by email to the course coordinator, with a cc to the supervisor.
- Pre-requisites checking has been performed by the course coordinator and eligibility under Eligibility Checklist “A” is confirmed. Should there be any issues, the course coordinator will inform the course supervisor and the student. Authorization to enroll in the course will not be granted.
- Contract review (course content review) has been performed by the course coordinator, and Eligibility Checklist “B” is confirmed. Should there be any issues, the course coordinator will raise them with the course supervisor and the student, the contract can be revised and resubmitted. Authorization to enroll in the course will not be granted without a satisfactory contract.
Fulfilling Eligibility Checklist “C” means that all conditions have been satisfied and you have been authorized to enroll in the course.
Authorization to Enrol
- Once you are authorized to enrol in the course, this course will become an option for you to select in the online enrollment system.
- The course catalog number will vary depending on the course and the term. Look up the course catalog number in the York Courses Web Site or the Visual Schedule Builder.
- All enrollment and financial deadlines apply to this course, just like any other course that is part of your degree. See Registrar's Office: Important Dates
At this point, you are enrolled in the course.
Further questions? Please consult the Frequently Asked Questions first. If your question remains unanswered, then please feel free to email the course director.
This is a course for advanced students, normally those in the fourth year of an honours program, or students who have passed 36 computer science credits. Students who have a project they wish to do need to convince a member of the faculty in the Department that it is appropriate for course credit. Alternatively, students may approach a faculty member in the Department (typically, one who is teaching or doing research in the area of the project) and ask for project suggestions. Whatever the origin of the project, a “contract” is required. It must state the scope of the project, the schedule of work, the resources required, and the criteria for evaluation. The contract must be signed by the student and his/her project supervisor and be acceptable to the course director. A critical course component that must be included in the contract is a formal seminar presentation. The course director will arrange the seminar sessions, and students and their faculty supervisors are required to participate. The seminar talks will have a typical length of 15-20 minutes, and will be evaluated by the individual supervisor, the course director and one more faculty member. This talk will be worth 30% of the final mark. The remaining 70% of the course mark is the responsibility of the individual supervisor.
Prerequisites:
- cumulative GPA of 4.50 or better over all major EECS courses (without second digit “5”);
- LE/EECS 2030 3.00 or LE/EECS 1030 3.00; and
- permission of the course coordinator.
- Normally restricted to students who have taken 36 credits in computer science.
Course Credit Exclusions: EECS 4081 6.00, EECS 4082 6.00, EECS 4084 6.00, EECS 4088 6.00, EECS 4480 3.00, ENG 4000 6.00
