Taken from Steven Castellucci's testing and documentation of cgi scripts in labtest mode

His code takes input from the users' session and creates a directory for the user
in /eecs/dept/course/2014-15/S/1030/mcTests (with owner:group being
labtest:labtest)
The cgi script is located in /eecs/dept/www/www.eecs.yorku.ca/course_archive/2014-15/S/1030/Test1

Often, labtest mode is perceived as being overly complicated. The basic setup of labtest is actually relatively simple. Most of the problems that occur are a result of misunderstanding file and directory permissions while in labtest mode. As such, the purpose of this document is to try to strengthen the concept of file and directory permission within the labtest environment.

Sometimes, during labtest mode, you may require a student to move from one machine to another machine. This may be because the student is in the wrong area of the lab, or because there is some failure on the machine (eg. monitor). Labtest home directories are stored on the local machine, and not a network drive.
Setting Up Deferred Exams

Deferred exams for a course are normally run in the following term. For example if an exam is deferred from the winter term, the students will probably write the deferred exam at the start of the summer term. By this time, /eecs/course has changed to point to the current term. In the current term, the course directory may be owned by different faculty, or the course may not even be taught.

Basic Labtest Setup

In order to setup a basic labtest, you must complete the following 4 basic steps:

1.  Create Directories

Create a directory in your course web directory called “labtest”. For example:

mkdir /eecs/dept/www/course_archive/2016-17/S/9999/labtest

Labtest mode provides a secure computing environment where students have access to the software on our systems, a single course directory, and a course labtest web site, but lose access to all of the files in their home directory, sending and receiving e-mail, printing, the external web, USB key/cdrom/floppy access, existing temporary files stored on the machine, and all access to the Internet including access to other

Testing your Labtest Setup

Wouldn't it be great if after you've completed your labtest setup, you could test it out from the comfort of your office? Well, you can.

First, connect to the labtest test web server:

<https://labtesteval.eecs.yorku.ca>

This service will only work locally and is only available to faculty.

	* From which hosts do you run pcmode command?

   MUST BE DONE from Host pcmode and by any TECH member
	* To stop a reboot session in the last 5 minutes

       $ /xsys/pkg/pcmode/bin/pcmode -a hostname
        This will stop the login to the host and kill the job
        eg

User Restriction Setup (optional)

By default, when you reserve the lab for Linux or Labtest mode, your booking will have no user restrictions. That is, any student can login to any lab machine including students who are not part of your course. Ultimately, this is the simplest setup as once you enable user restrictions, there is always the potential to inadvertently restrict students from logging in who should otherwise be able to login! As a result, if you wish to have the ability to restri…

2017

Various changes were made to labtest over the summer of 2017:

	* During labtest, in /eecs/dept, you will only see “www” and “course” directories. For example, you no longer have access to /eecs/dept/dist in labtest mode.

Labtest under Windows

Labtest is available for limited use under Windows, but requires consultation with tech. Machines will boot first into Linux labtest mode, and then Windows will run in a VirtualBox session. Students login to what appears to be a Linux system, but after logging in, the VirtualBox session is immediately started, and Windows boots taking over the full screen. With labtest running underneath, we get these benefits:
