What is the difference between the LECT and ONCA sections?

EECS3000 in the winter term W26 will have two sections:

  • Section M, Mode of Learning Code: LECT, large size
  • Section O, Mode of Learning Code: ONCA, smaller size ~50 students

The "ONCA" Course Section

This section of the course is mostly online.

Classes: The classes of the ONCA section will be are delivered online. For W26, this means a learning format in which students do not meet together at the same time. Instead of a live lecture each week, course materials (like video lectures, readings, and assignments) are made available for students to access and complete within the course week. Students may complete the course materials on their own schedules within the week.

Assessments: Some of the assessments (term tests, graded activities, and the final exam) will be in person and will take place on campus. Other of the assessments will be asynchronous and not in person (complete on your own time within the week and submit via eclass). The in-person assessments are required, and the student's in-person attendance is required and not subject to negotiation.

Section Size: My expectation is that the size of this section will be very large. It is expected that most students will be interested and motivated to enroll in Section O. There will likely be 400+ students in Section O of EECS3000 in the 2025-26 academic year.

Content: The classes and activities of the course will deliver what is set out in the course description. The content of Section O will be matched to the content of Section M. The course experience of Section O will differ from Section M because it will not have live lectures, nor in-class discussions and activities. However, you will still have plenty of opportunities to engage in debates and discussions through alternative means, such as scenario analyses, peer reviews, and collaborative wikis. Section O and Section M will both have in-person term tests and an in-person final exam.

Can I attend Section M class meetings? Unfortunately, no. Due to the way the course is designed and due to logistics, it will not be possible to float between Section M and Section O. You will need to do the activities as set out in your officially-enrolled section. Section O will be quite flexible in terms of timing. If you are enrolled in Section O, you will likely not be able to attend Section M due to maximum occupancy limitations of the classroom.

The "LECT" Course Section

Classes: The classes of LECT section will be scheduled class meetings each week, with live presentation and in-person discussions.

Assessments: Some of the assessments (term tests, graded activities, and the final exam) will be in person and will take place on campus. Other of the assessments will be asynchronous and not in person (complete on your own time and submit via eclass). The in-person assessments are required, and the student's in-person attendance is required and not subject to negotiation.

Section Size: In order for us to be able to engage in discussions and do in-class activities, this size of this section will be relatively small (like around 50 students). This is certainly smaller than the expected 500+ students who are expected to enroll in EECS3000 in the 2025-26 academic year.

Content: The classes and activities of the course will deliver what is set out in the course description. The content of Section O will be matched to the content of Section M. The course experience of Section M will differ from Section O because it will have live lectures and, building from these live lectures, in-class discussions, debates and in-person activities. Section O and Section M will both have in-person term tests and an in-person final exam.

Can I do Section O for weeks I'm not able to attend class meetings? Unfortunately, no. Due to the way the course is designed and due to logistics, it will not be possible to float between Section M and Section O. You will need to do the activities as set out in your officially-enrolled section. Section M will have a reasonable policy about missing class. The Missed Class Policy will set out the number of in-class activities that can be missed without penalty. If you are enrolled in Section M, you will be expected to attend class and the Missed Class Policy will apply.
