E-Mail Relaying

The EECS mail server is configured to reject mail that does not originate from within the EECS department or which is not destined for a recipient in the EECS department. This is done to prevent our servers from being used to forward unsolicited bulk e-mail. Users connecting remotely via ISPs should use the SMTP server provided by their ISP for sending e-mail.

Our mail server (mail.eecs.yorku.ca) supports authenticated SMTP which allows users to use mail.eecs.yorku.ca as their outgoing mail server from outside of the department. To use this feature, you must enable both encryption (SSL/TLS) and authentication. (Either LOGIN or PLAINTEXT authentication will work.) Our mail server will not accept authentication without encryption being enabled.

Your username and password will be the same as the one you use for reading your e-mail.

Since most ISPs will block any outgoing connections to port 25, the standard SMTP port. You will need to configure your e-mail client to connect to port 587 on mail.eecs.yorku.ca.
